Digital cameras, Sensors & What’ s Following for Mozilla’ s Things Entrance
Today the Mozilla IoT group is happy to announce the zero. 7 release of the Things Gateway . This particular latest release brings experimental assistance for IP cameras, as well as assistance for a wider range of sensors. We’ ve also got some thrilling news on where the project is usually heading next.
Digital camera Support
With zero. 7, you can now view video avenues and get snapshots from IP digital cameras which follow the ONVIF standard like the Foscam R2 .
To enable ONVIF support, set up the ONVIF add-on via Configurations > Add-ons in the gateway’ ersus web interface.
Set up your digital camera as per the manufacturer’ s guidelines, including an username and password if it’ s required. (Always remember to differ from the default if there is one! ) Then, you can click the “ Configure” button on the ONVIF add-on (see above) to enter your sign in details in the form shown beneath:
Once the adapter is configured you have to be able to add your device within the usual way, by clicking on the particular + button on the Things display screen. When your camera appears you can provide a name before saving this:
When you click on the video camera you will see symbols for an image snapshot and/or video clip stream:
Click on the icons and the picture or video stream will pop-up on the screen. When viewing a picture property, you can click the reload key in the bottom left to refill the latest snapshot:
Video camera support remains experimental at this point as we look to optimize video performance, refine the USER INTERFACE and support a wider selection of hardware. If running on the Raspberry Pi you can expect to see a noticeable hold off on video streams as it transcodes video into a web friendly structure. We’ d appreciate your assist testing with different cameras and offering us feedback to help improve this particular feature.
Things Gateway 0. seven also comes with support for a broader range of sensors.
We have added assistance for temperature sensors (e. gary the gadget guy. Eve Diploma , Event Room and the SmartThings Multipurpose messfühler ).
And we have additional support for leak sensors (e. g. the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor and the Fibaro Flood Sensor ).
This means you can also at this point create new types of rules within the rules engine, for example to turn on the fan when temperature reaches a particular level, or be notified in case a leak is detected.
Thing Description Changes
For developers, this release provides some changes to the Thing Description format used to advertise the attributes, actions, and events web stuff support.
Rather than offering a single URL in an
href member, every
Event item can now provide an array of links with the
mediaType for each
Link item. This is particularly useful for the new
VideoCamera capabilities, which can provide hyperlinks to an image resource or movie stream. Below is an example of some thing Description for a video camera that facilitates both new capabilities.

You may also notice that
brand has been renamed in order to
title to be more in line with the latest W3C draft of the Thing Description standards .
We make an attempt to retain backwards compatibility where probable, but please expect more modifications like this as we rapidly evolve the one thing Description specification.

Taking things (pun intended) to another level in 2019, a big concentrate for our team will be to evolve the present Things Gateway application into a software program distribution for wireless routers.
